Morning Meetings

Morning Meetings are an important part for our daily class routine. Morning Meetings have four parts: a greeting, a time for sharing, an activity, and a Morning Message that touches on something we are learning.

At the start of our meetings each day, every child is greeted by name by at least two of their classmates. This teaches students how to greet people and how to ask someone his or her name. Being personally greeted by their classmates each day, helps students feel like they belong and are a part of our classroom.

During sharing, students have an opportunity to tell stories about things that are important to them. Sometimes we share as a whole class, sometimes we share in pairs, and sometimes we share in small groups. In the picture below, you'll see students learning to talk to others and stay on topic, focus on and listen to each other, take turns, and ask questions focused on the speaker.

In the third part of our meeting, students participate in a group activity that reinforces an academic or social skill. Many of our activities this week have centered around exploring poetry and practicing literacy skills by reading "My Puppy Punched Me in the Eye" by Ken Nesbitt.

Our final activity is reading the class's response to our Morning Message. This daily message asks a question about something we have been studying, like ways to write numbers and things good writers do.
