You noticed a ribbon of smoke to the northeast when you awoke.  If it were a forest fire, there would have been a cloud of it.  More likely, it is a campfire.  Fortunately for you, a campfire means people and a chance to find out where you are.

With muscles slightly stiff from laying on the cold, hard ground for who-knows-how-long, you head off in the direction of the smoke.
